I decided to be a vet aged eight. Everyone made appreciative noises, so I persevered. It was a lucky decision and turned out well.

I had a great time as a student. Trinity no longer has a Veterinary School, but it did.

I was born and bred in Ireland, mostly in County Wicklow. Aged 17 I was accepted into the Trinity College Dublin Veterinary School. In 1974 I came to England for a year. I am still here.
I fell in love with small animal veterinary surgery in London, having originally intended to go back and practice farm medicine in County Meath.

I practiced in Kennington from 1979 to 1989 when I was forced (long story) to sell up. I opened up in Stockwell in 1990 and worked there until 1998. In 1996 I opened a practice in Clapham and ran it with other vets and nurses. By ’98 it needed a bit of a push so I moved from Stockwell to Clapham where I practiced until 2019. In 2016 I opened The London Animal Hospital, a 24/7/365 emergency practice. Over those years I also opened in Mitcham, Brixton Hill, Bermondsey, Citivet Mile End Road (with Tom Yarrow) and the Clerkenwell Animal Hospital (with Mark Lindfield.) I did minimal work in most of these practices personally. I also bought out Ian Kelf in Wandsworth 1996 to help him out. In 2019 it was time to retire. In rough terms 10 years in Kennington, 10 years in Stockwell. and 25 years in Clapham
All along I had done a bit of writing. I did a monthly column for “The Vauxhall View” from 1983 to 1987 – about 30 issues in total – and one or two articles for local magazines
About 1990 I had an idea for a novel. I have talked about it for so long now that people move away when I bring it up, and an occasional person asks me how it is going with an expression of long-suffering angst.
In 2021 I signed up for a post-graduate Creative Writing MA at Exeter, which I finished last year having had a year out with surgery and chemo. As far as I can tell, I’m fine now, and I even turned up for the graduation ceremony
